One Wash Can Save a Life
Handwash Guidelines
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) are essential for life, health, dignity, empowerment and prosperity, a fundamental human right to every child and adult. In Ugandan context, poor sanitation and hygiene, as well as unequal access to safe drinking water, have made thousands of children and adults vulnerable to sickness and risks of death. Education and communication strategies under WASH about behaviour change have been explored to disseminate information to targeted audiences about issues of handwashing, Safe drinking water and Sanitation among communities.
Much as various communication and creative strategies about behaviour change on issues of handwashing, have been explored by UNICEF (2022) and Uganda, government, adherence to handwashing in urban areas in Uganda remains a very big challenge due to lack of consistent information flow, attitude about handwashing, the media used and its reach. The study therefore, explores how handwash messages and guidelines can be enhanced through use of 3D animation for improved interactivity with the communities.

The
Concept
The campaign reimagines hygiene education through animated characters—Drop Hero, Soap Buddy, and Towel Guardian—turning each handwashing step into a playful, story-driven adventure.

Storyline Narrative
Through lively animation and cheerful narration, the story follows friendly guardians guiding children through the five handwashing steps, defeating cartoon germs in a bright, bubble-filled world.
Application of 3D Animation
3D animation was used to create expressive characters, dynamic motion, and visual depth, enhancing comprehension and emotional engagement far beyond traditional 2D or live-action formats.
Campaign Overview and Goal
Designed to engage children and caregivers, the campaign aimed to replace static posters with interactive 3D storytelling that teaches proper handwashing while promoting joy and participation.
Rationale and Media Adaptability
By blending education with entertainment, the campaign adapts easily across schools, TV, and digital platforms, ensuring accessibility and sustained impact within diverse cultural and media contexts.

Studio Guiding Questions

How have messages, images, and media been used in execution of existing handwash campaigns?

This guided the integration of gamified, participatory learning experiences that replaced passive visuals with character-driven 3D animation.
How can 3D animation technique be used to augment handwash messages and guidelines?

This question informed the creation of anthropomorphic “guardian” characters, Soap Buddy, Drop Hero, and Towel Guardian, that embodied each step, reinforcing action through emotion, rhythm, and repetition.
Thematization and Design Thinking Process
The design process followed the Design Thinking framework, ensuring human-centered creation
01
Empathize
Identified that existing posters were too static and abstract for children; young audiences responded better to color, rhythm, and character-based storytelling.
02
Define
Framed the problem as: “How might we make the five-step handwashing process exciting and memorable for children?”
03
Ideate
Brainstormed character metaphors (water, soap, towel, germs) and musical motifs to link hygiene with fun.
04
Prototype
Developed 2D storyboards, synchronized jingle timing, and tested narration tone for clarity and engagement.
05
Test
Iteratively refined animations, adjusting pacing and sound effects to align with child attention spans and feedback.

[Opening | 0–5s]

Intended Impact and Significance
The campaign’s design aimed to shift handwashing from instruction to performance, positioning children as active participants in hygiene education. By merging animation, sound, and storytelling, it promotes memory retention and emotional engagement while reinforcing social norms of cleanliness.
It contributes to WASH and SDG 6 goals by demonstrating how 3D animation can act as a scalable educational tool for behaviour change, particularly in low-resource and school-based settings.
Ultimately, “One Wash Can Save a Life - Handwash Guidelines” embodies how design can turn hygiene into joy, translating learning into daily practice.

Summary
The findings for this campaign reveal that the transformation from static guideline posters to a 3D animated instructional film required a systematic pipeline: concept development, scripting, storyboarding, 3D modelling, voice production, model exploration, structured prompt generation, animation, and final editing. Each stage contributed a specific affordance, storyboards aligned narrative clarity, Whisk ensured volumetric consistency, Speechma and ElevenLabs enhanced emotional appeal, Wan 2.2 provided exploratory comparison, VEO 3 delivered animation fidelity, and Premiere Pro unified the components into a polished whole. The result was a campaign that maintained procedural accuracy while reframing handwashing as a joyful and memorable ritual.
